Exodus 20:12 Honoring Fathers By Faith

Exodus 20:12 Honoring Fathers by Faith

12Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.”

Exodus 20:12

Today, we celebrate Father’s Day, a special occasion to honor and appreciate the role of fathers in our lives.

Reflecting on the significance of this day, and turning to God’s word for instruction, in Exodus 20:12 God commands us to honor our father and our mother, so that we may live long in the land the Lord our God is giving us.

These words convey a profound message about the importance of honoring our heavenly Father and our earthly fathers.

First, we are called to honor God, our heavenly Father.

Exodus 20:12 serves as a reminder that our earthly fathers are a reflection of our heavenly Father’s love and care.

Our heavenly Father is the ultimate source of our existence, He is the one who provides for us and guides us in the path of righteousness.

When we honor and respect our earthly fathers, we also honor and respect our heavenly Father. Through our obedience and reverence, we demonstrate our gratitude for His blessings and acknowledge His authority over our lives.

I don’t have to be a psychologist to realize our earthly fathers play a pivotal role in shaping our lives. Surely your father has had a fair amount of influence on you, as my father has since I was in my mother’s womb.

Our fathers provide us with love, protection, guidance, and support. Sadly, because they are sinners, fathers also pass on baggage.

Honoring our fathers goes beyond merely acknowledging their presence; it entails showing them respect, gratitude, and appreciation for the sacrifices they made and continue to make, and the love they bestow upon us. In honoring our fathers, we recognize the responsibility they carry and the impact they have on our lives.

When we honor our fathers, we not only fulfill God’s commandment but also open ourselves to His abundant blessings.

God promises that those who honor their parents will live long in the land He has given them. This promise extends beyond physical longevity; it encompasses a life lived in harmony with God’s divine plan and purpose.

When we honor our fathers, we create an atmosphere of love, unity, and respect within our families—a foundation upon which future generations can build.

It is important to acknowledge that no earthly fathers are perfect.

Some may have made mistakes or fallen short of our expectations.

However, as children of God, we are called to extend grace and forgiveness. Just as our heavenly Father forgives us, we should seek to forgive our fathers and foster healing and restoration in our relationships. Through forgiveness, we can break the cycle of hurt and embrace the transformative power of God’s love.

Today, as we celebrate Father’s Day, let us remember the commandment in Exodus 20:12 to honor our fathers. By doing so, we honor our heavenly Father and recognize the immense role fathers play in our lives.

Let us express gratitude, respect, and love towards our fathers and seek to foster harmonious relationships within our families.

As we live out this commandment, we open ourselves to God’s blessings and create a legacy of faith, love, and honor that will endure for generations to come. May the grace of our heavenly Father empower us to fulfill this commandment and walk in His ways.

Shield us from evil through your Word, salvation and prayer,
Guide us to abide by the truth as we spread the good news to one and all,
And lead the lost to You.

Through faith in you Lord we seek salvation and our place with you in Heaven
According to your ways, your everlasting wisdom and strength.
