A new year slowly gets under way, this is a time often filled with hope as last year’s resolutions kick-in; Hopes of a better job instead of strength to “do”a better job, a better mate rather than the patience needed to fully enjoy my current relationship, and of course, a better “me” rather than praying for humility so I can accept the person God made me to be.
What is it with people and wishful thinking? What makes us always want more? Wouldn’t life be better if we were glad for what we have rather than keep wanting more? I think we all know the answer to that question.
More than an answer, being happy with all that we have should be a way of life! Unfortunately, it isn’t for all of us. How can a concept so simple escape most of us? I personally don’t buy the theory it’s “human nature” to always want more and never be satisfied with what we have. I just don’t buy it!
I don’t buy it because greed leads to misery. This is a fact of life obvious all around us. I greatly sympathize for those who continue to strive for a materialistic goal rather than a honorable one.
I was shocked this past week during a conversation with a friend when she shouted “when are things going to get better”. Irony has this woman is truly blessed by God and well on her way to living a purposeful life walking in Jesus’ footsteps. What would make such a gifted person forget her blessings? How could a true Christian give-in to greed? One answer to that question can be found in God’s word, in the book of Numbers. The story of the prophet Balaam is a perfect example of weak faith driven by greed. I invite you to look it up and see for yourself that greed leads to destruction and grave judgment by the Lord.
We all experience weak moments, this is when God expects us to see the light He has burning within each one of us helping each one of us follow His lead.
We can either humble ourselves and be thankful for all that God gives us or, we can be overwhelmed by greed and keep living empty lives knowing “enough” will never be enough.
Be thankful for God blessings in your life and let Him inspire you to become a blessing in someone else’s life. Praise the Lord for all He’s given you and remember all material things can be taken away by man in an instant but your relationship with God will continue forever.
We thank you for your blessings in our lives
And for all that surrounds us each day,
We thank you for the people in our lives and their love
And ask you to look over them as only you can.
Lord we thank you for forgiving our sins
And for your presence in our lives,
We ask you to continue to lead our paths
So that we may follow in your footsteps
And become more like you.
Father we pray you will make us stronger
In times when we are weak and forget
You will always be there watching over us
Providing all we need in this life and the next.
