Paul felt responsible for provoking the Corinthian church to keep their promise made to God regarding their contribution for the poor in Jerusalem, one of the benefactors of Paul’s missionary work.
Whereas the apostle until now spoke on behalf of himself, Timothy and other fellow laborers in Christ, Paul now singles himself out as sole writer speaking only on his own accord.
“1 Now I, Paul, myself am pleading with you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—who in presence am lowly among you, but being absent am bold toward you.” (2 Corinthians 10:1)
Paul’s wish was that upon his next visit to Corinth, he could walk among the Corinthians in peace rather than rebuke, in meekness, not boldness as he would show himself to be in this letter, specially in the forthcoming chapters.
“2 But I beg you that when I am present I may not be bold with that confidence by which I intend to be bold against some, who think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.” (2 Corinthians 10:2)
Paul mentions his intent on rebuking skeptics who questioned Paul’s intent for the Corinthians’ tithe. The apostle’s intent for the collection gathered in Corinth stretched beyond assisting the poor in Jerusalem. The Corinthians’ obedience was also in the spotlight as Paul’s flagship church.
It was imperative the believers in Corinth be blessed not only with the outpouring of God’s favor in other areas of their lives, but also in the area of prosperity. The only biblical channel that leads to such prosperous lives is tithing, giving back to the Lord what is already His, trusting His plan is perfect and knowing all our deeds are rewarded.
“3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.” (2 Corinthians 10:3-6)
Paul acknowledges he and his fellow laborers in Christ live in the world, but do not according to its decadence. The apostle describes the weapons used by believers as “mighty in God” and able to overcome any enemy or adversary of Jesus Christ.
These weapons are faith, salvation and the Holy word of God. Paul was ready to face his skeptics, are you?
Just as Paul and his fellow missionaries, all believers should continuously improve their weapons, their armor, their sword. By preparing ourselves, we become better soldiers in Christ. Small groups, bible study and continual spiritual growth are all essential part of one’s growth… Let us pray!
Father God;
We thank you for your blessings in our lives and for your servant Paul,
We praise you Lord for his wisdom and for his works through this scripture,
We ask you Lord to inspire us to use these verses in our lives
As we grow in you through the teachings of your faithful apostle.
Lord we ask you to strengthen us each day as we endure through battles,
Allow us to praise and love each other through faith in you Jesus,
Shield us from evil through truth, the gospel, salvation and prayer,
Guide us to abide by your word as we spread your gospel to one and all
Becoming examples of faith through our character as we walk the narrow path.
God we pray that you will continue to bless us, to bless our lives and fill us with hope
We ask you Lord to guide our footsteps and lead us to the way everlasting,
Through faith in you Lord we seek salvation and a place with you in heaven
According to your word, your everlasting wisdom and strength.
May your will be done
