John 15:12-13 Memorial Day – The Greatest Love Of All

John 15:12-13 The Greatest Love Of All

12 This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”

John 15:12-13

To all those who served, and to their loved ones, thank you.

Memorial Day became a federal holiday in in US in 1971, and it is held each year on the last Monday of May throughout the United States.

On this holiday, Americans honor those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

Just as Jesus did on the cross, countless soldiers have given their lives out of duty, dedication and out of love.

The kind of love parents pour out on their children, a love so deep, so genuinely pure that it leads men and women to put their lives on the line for countless people they don’t even know.

I was blessed to train with the Canadian Armed forces on two separate occasions back in the 1980’s. I was selected to fly F-18 Hornet fighter jets, but sadly I was unable to complete training. Because if this, I had a very short stay in the military.

More recently, I served our nation as 2nd Lieutenant with Civil Air Patrol, the official United States Air Force Auxiliary.

And at 59 years old, that’s as close as I’m going to get to active military service in the US, and I am immensely grateful for God’s plan and for the divine path He has me on as one of His civilian servants.

However, for countless Americans, the military was the Lord’s plan for them. And, their service to their American brothers and sisters eventually lead each one to their death while selflessly serving this great nation.

Their sacrifice is at the root of the celebration we call, Memorial Day.

On this special day in America, we are called to honor those who fell for our freedom.

It is with a heart filled with gratitude and love that I give praise to all those who fight for freedom, and lift up to God those who perished in the line of duty.

May each one rejoice with God in Heaven forever!

To him who has an ear, let him hear.

Father God;
On this sacred day, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude and reverence.

We remember the brave men and women who laid down their lives for the freedom we so often take for granted.

As Jesus taught us, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”

Lord, we honor that love today—the kind that mirrors Christ’s own sacrifice.

We lift up the souls of those who gave everything, and we pray comfort over the families who still carry the weight of their loss.

Let their courage never be forgotten, and let their legacy shape a nation that walks in justice, peace, and humility.

Bless our servicemembers, past and present, and guide us all to live lives worthy of their sacrifice.
In Jesus’ holy name we pray,

Amen!
