”31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.”
Proverbs 31:31
Happy Mother’s Day!
Today, as we celebrate Mother’s Day, we reflect on the profound impact of maternal love and wisdom in our lives. In Proverbs 31:31, we find a powerful affirmation of the virtuous woman – “Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” Let us delve into this verse and honor the remarkable mothers who have shaped our lives.
I. The Virtuous Woman:
Proverbs 31 paints a vivid portrait of the virtuous woman – a woman of strength, dignity, and wisdom. She is described as industrious, resourceful, and compassionate, tirelessly caring for her family and community. Her value far exceeds that of precious jewels, for she is the heart and soul of her household.
II. Reflecting on Our Mothers:
Today, let’s pause to reflect on the mothers in our lives who embody the virtues described in Proverbs 31. Whether biological mothers, adoptive mothers, or maternal figures, they have selflessly poured their love and wisdom into nurturing us, shaping us into the individuals we are today. Let us honor them for their sacrifices, their unwavering support, and their unconditional love.
III. A Mother’s Legacy:
The influence of a mother extends far beyond her immediate family. Like ripples in a pond, her love and teachings resonate through generations, shaping the world around her. Today, we honor the legacy of mothers who have left an indelible mark on our lives and communities, and we commit to carrying forward their values and teachings for generations to come.
IV. Honoring Our Own:
As we celebrate Mother’s Day, it is important to acknowledge that not all mothers fit the mold of the virtuous woman described in Proverbs 31. Some may have struggled with their own demons, faced hardships, suffered mental health issues or fallen short of societal expectations. Yet, even in their imperfections, they have loved us fiercely and taught us valuable lessons about resilience, forgiveness, and unconditional love.
V. Navigating Complex Relationships:
For some, Mother’s Day may evoke feelings of sadness, grief, or even anger, especially for those who have experienced strained or broken relationships with their mothers. It is important to acknowledge and validate these emotions, while also seeking healing and reconciliation where possible. Remember, forgiveness does not mean condoning hurtful behavior, but rather freeing oneself from the burden of resentment.
VI. Embracing the Role of Motherhood:
For those who are mothers themselves, Mother’s Day is an opportunity to reflect on the privilege and responsibility of parenthood. Whether you are a biological mother, a stepmother, or a maternal figure, your role is invaluable in shaping the lives of future generations. Embrace the joys and challenges of motherhood, knowing that your love and guidance will leave a lasting legacy.
I was blessed with a wonderful mom. She was kind, caring and she did all she could to keep our family thriving in spite of challenges she faced in her life.
It pains me to say that the mother of my children was very different from my own mother. She struggled with motivation and chose not to contribute financially to our family. Unfortunately, like her own manic depressive mother, she also faced mental health challenges that she left unaddressed, and over time, these issues deeply affected our children and ultimately led to the breakdown of our family.
Is Your Mother Worthy Of Praise?
Not all mothers are worthy of praise just because they are mothers. Being a mom does not automatically equate to praise. Rather, it is those moms who complete the work God gives them to do, these are the mothers who are worthy of praise.
The work of virtuous mothers is not invisible, as completing the work we are assigned by God is at the root of Christianity.
Let us heed the wisdom of Proverbs 31:31 and honor the mothers who have enriched our lives with their love, wisdom, and strength. Whether our own mothers, our children’s mothers, or maternal figures who have guided us along life’s journey, let us celebrate their immeasurable contributions with gratitude and reverence.
To God be all the glory, now and forever.
