Persecuted for preaching the gospel, around A.D. 95, John was exiled to Patmos, an island on the Aegean Sea where he received a revelation from an angel of Christ.
Previously, Christ spoke to John through a vision that included seven candlesticks which represent the seven churches in Asia; the Loveless Church at Ephesus, the Persecuted Church at Smyrna, the Compromising Church at Pergamos, the Corrupt Church at Thyatira, the Dead Church at Sardis, the Faithful Church at Philadelphia and the Lukewarm Church at Laodicea.
Then, in the vision, Jesus revealed to John the Throne Room of Heaven as well as a scroll, sealed with seven seals which only the Lamb of God was worthy to loosen. Before He open the scroll, the Lamb was praised by all the creatures on the earth and in Heaven, as well as countless angels.
When the first seal was loosen, John saw the anti-christ riding a white horse. Next, the second seal was opened and revealed a rider armed with a sword on a fiery red horse, which meant worldwide bloodshed and inhalation of epic magnitude.
“5 When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand.” (Revelation 6:5)
After the Lamb of God loosened the scroll’s third seal, John’s vision continued to be focused on war, as another horse and rider were shown onto him. The horse, now black signified both war and sorrow, while the rider’s weapon this time was neither a bow, nor a sword but scales that indicated a great famine throughout the whole earth.
“6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.” (Revelation 6:6)
Then, John heard a voice coming from the “all seeing” living creatures that addressed the price of wheat and barley, which are revealed as extraordinarily high, as much as a man’s wage for an entire day for a serving of grain that would sustain life.
Additionally, the voice instructed the rider of the black horse not to influence the abundance or price of oil or wine, as scarcity should seemingly only impact specific crops, indicating a divinely appointed meteorological phenomenon of epic proportions. Let’s pray!
