“5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall [adirect your paths. ”Introduction:
Proverbs 3:5-6
Driving is one of the most common activities we engage in daily. It provides convenience, freedom, and efficiency, but it also comes with significant risks. Every time we get behind the wheel, we place our trust in our driving skills, the reliability of our vehicle, and the attentiveness of other drivers. But ultimately, our safety and our lives are in God’s hands.
A few days ago, I had a powerful reminder of this truth.
As I was driving home from work, around 6:30pm in North Miami Beach, an out-of-control car crashed into four vehicles right ahead of me. It was a chaotic moment—metal crunching, horns blaring, and drivers reacting in panic. By God’s grace, my Tesla was missed by a hair. It was nothing short of a miracle, and it reinforced the importance of trusting God in every aspect of life, including something as routine as driving.
Acknowledging God’s Sovereignty in Our Travels
The verse in Proverbs reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our heart. This means surrendering every part of our lives to Him, including our daily commutes and travels. Too often, we rely solely on our own abilities, our car’s technology, or defensive driving skills. While these are important, they cannot guarantee our safety. God is the ultimate protector, guiding us even when danger is near.
Psalm 121:8 tells us, “The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” This promise reassures us that when we trust in God, He watches over us whether we are driving on the highway, taking a trip, or just running errands. Every trip we take is under His watchful eye.
Recognizing God’s Protection in Unexpected Moments
Reflecting on my near miss, I realize that God’s hand was undeniably at work. I was just moments away from what could have been a devastating collision. It wasn’t luck or chance—it was God’s divine protection.
In Psalm 91:11, the Bible teaches us, “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” God often intervenes in ways we may never fully comprehend. Sometimes, He delays us at a traffic light to keep us from an accident. Other times, He may place another vehicle in harm’s way to shield us. His ways are beyond our understanding, but we must trust that He is always working for our good.
Overcoming Fear and Anxiety on the Road
After witnessing such a close call, it would be easy to become fearful every time I drive. Many people struggle with anxiety about traveling, especially after experiencing or witnessing an accident. However, Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us not to lean on our own understanding but to acknowledge God in all our ways. This means giving our fears to Him and trusting Him to guide us safely.
In Isaiah 41:10, God tells us, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” If fear begins to creep in, we must remind ourselves of God’s promises. He is with us, and He gives us peace when we trust in Him.
Praying for God’s Guidance Before We Drive
One of the most practical ways to trust God on the road is through prayer. Before we start our cars, we should ask for His protection, wisdom, and guidance. A simple prayer like, “Lord, I commit this journey into Your hands. Keep me alert, protect me from harm, and guide my path,” can make a difference.
James 1:5 reminds us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” Asking for wisdom in driving situations—whether in bad weather, heavy traffic, or near reckless drivers—allows us to make safer decisions under God’s guidance
That near accident was a wake-up call and a powerful testimony of God’s protection. It reminded me that trusting God isn’t just about big life decisions; it’s about everyday moments, including when we drive. Proverbs 3:5-6 calls us to surrender everything to Him, trusting that He will direct our paths—including the roads we travel on.
As we go about our daily commutes, let’s remember to invite God into our journeys. Let’s trust Him more, acknowledge Him in all we do, and rest in His unfailing protection. Whether we arrive early or face delays, whether traffic is light or heavy, let’s drive with faith, knowing that God is with us every mile of the way.
The next time you buckle up and start your car, take a moment to commit your drive to God. He is in control, and when we trust Him with all our hearts, we can drive in peace, knowing He is watching over us.
To God be all the glory, now and forever.
