Mark 1:9-11 John Baptizes Jesus

In his epistle written around A.D. 66, John Mark began his letter by introducing John The Baptist, God’s messenger by describing how his role was to announce the coming of the Messiah, in both the physical wilderness of the region as well as the spiritual wilderness throughout Judea.

Next, the apostle introduces Jesus…

“9 It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.” (Mark 1:9)

Mark now describes how John baptized Jesus in the Jordan river in spite of the fact the Son of God was without sin, and since John’s baptism was one of repentance, the Baptist saw no need for Jesus to be baptized. However, the Lamb of God instructed John to perform the baptism never the less so to fulfill all righteousness, and identify the Christ with those He came to redeem.

“10 And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove.” (Mark 1:10)

As John concluded his baptism of the Lamb, when Jesus came out of the water He observed a divine appointment as the sky opened up to reveal the Holy Spirit descending upon the Christ, thereby starting Jesus’ ministry.

“11 Then a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Mark 1:11)

Lastly, Mark describes how God, the divine Father spoke from heaven, giving His blessing to Jesus as He embarked on the fulfillment of prophecy through His ministry, changing the eternal destination of countless sinners who, without Christ would surely be doomed, forever. Let’s pray!

Father God;
We thank you for your blessings in our lives,
We praise you Lord for the wisdom found through the gospel of Mark,
We ask you Lord to inspire us to use these verses in our lives
As we continue to learn more about you through your word.

Lord we ask you to strengthen us each day as we endure through battles,
Allow us to praise and love each other through faith in you Jesus,
Shield us from evil through truth, the gospel, salvation and prayer,
Guide us to abide by your word as we spread your gospel to one and all
Becoming examples of faith through our character as we walk the narrow path.

God we pray that you will continue to bless us, to bless our lives and fill us with hope
We ask you Lord to guide our footsteps and lead us to the way everlasting,
Through faith in you Lord we seek salvation and a place with you in heaven
According to your ways, your everlasting wisdom and strength.

May your will be done
In our lives, for your life.

We thank you for your love and all you bless us with each day.

Praise God,
Amen!
