Mark 1:16-20 Four Fishermen Called as Disciples

In his epistle written around A.D. 66, John Mark began his letter by introducing John The Baptist, God’s messenger by describing how his role was to announce the coming of the Messiah, and baptize Him in the Jordan River so Jesus could fulfill all righteousness, and be identify with those He came to redeem.

After He was baptized, Christ was tested by Satan in the wilderness for forty days but the Messiah persevered and resisted temptation as He prepared for His ministry, which He started in Galilee while John The Baptist was imprisoned for rebuking Herod Antipas.

Next, Mark tells us about Jesus’ encounter with His first four apostles…

“16 And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 17 Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18 They immediately left their nets and followed Him.” (Mark 1:16-18)

The Sea of Galilee is a freshwater lake about 13 miles long, 8 miles wide and 686 feet below sea level, making this lake the lowest body of fresh water on Earth. The source of a thriving fishing industry, the Sea of Galilee is fed mainly by the Jordan River. It was by the shore of this lake that Jesus called His first two apostles who were destined to become disciples as each one fulfilled prophecy to embark on the great commission.

“19 When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets. 20 And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.” (Mark 1:19-20)

Further down the lake, Jesus walked up to two more fishermen who He also called to follow Him, and immediately both brothers James and John left their father and his crew to serve the Lord.

These were Jesus’ first four apostles, fishermen who were dedicated men, accustomed to a profitable life style yet ready to give up their livelihood and security to follow a person whom they knew very little about. Let’s pray!

Father God;
We thank you for your blessings in our lives,
We praise you Lord for the wisdom found through the gospel of Mark,
We ask you Lord to inspire us to use these verses in our lives
As we continue to learn more about you through your word.

Lord we ask you to strengthen us each day as we endure through battles,
Allow us to praise and love each other through faith in you Jesus,
Shield us from evil through truth, the gospel, salvation and prayer,
Guide us to abide by your word as we spread your gospel to one and all
Becoming examples of faith through our character as we walk the narrow path.

God we pray that you will continue to bless us, to bless our lives and fill us with hope
We ask you Lord to guide our footsteps and lead us to the way everlasting,
Through faith in you Lord we seek salvation and a place with you in heaven
According to your ways, your everlasting wisdom and strength.

May your will be done
In our lives, for your life.

We thank you for your love and all you bless us with each day.

Praise God,
Amen!
